How Much Does a Walk-In Shower Cost in San Diego?

The useful answer is a range plus an explanation of what moves it. Anyone who gives you a single number before seeing your bathroom is either padding it or will revise it later.

The five things that move the price

1. Demolition and what is behind the walls

Taking out a tub or an old stall is straightforward. What is behind it sometimes is not. Water that has been getting past a failed surround for years will have reached the framing, and that has to be put right before anything new goes on. This is the single most common reason a job turns out larger than it looked, which is why we would rather open it up and show you than quote around it.

2. Plumbing, and especially the drain

If the new shower sits where the old tub was, the drain often stays put and the valve is replaced in the same wall. That is the cheap, quick version. Moving a drain means getting under the floor, and in a slab-on-grade house — common across much of San Diego — that means cutting concrete. It is a different scale of job and it belongs on the quote as its own line.

3. The wall panels

Large-format stone composite panels cost more per square foot than basic tile and less than a full stone installation. The saving is in labour and in time: a few big sheets instead of hundreds of tiles, no grouting stage, no curing days. It is also the reason there is almost nothing to maintain afterwards.

4. Glass

This varies more than people expect. No door at all, with an open walk-in entry, is the simplest. A sliding door is mid-range. Frameless panels cost more because the glass is thicker, the hardware is heavier and the opening has to be measured after the walls are in, not before.

5. Accessories and fittings

Grab bars, a built-in or fold-down seat, niches, shelving, a handheld shower, the finish on the fittings. Individually small, collectively a real part of the number. Blocking for bars and seats has to go in while the walls are open, so it is worth deciding before work starts even if the bar itself goes on later.

What we do not charge for

The in-home consultation and the written quote are free, and there is no obligation. If the answer is that your bathroom needs something we do not do, that is a perfectly good outcome of a visit.

Common questions

Why won’t you quote a price over the phone?

Because the two things that move the price most are what is behind your walls and what is under your floor, and neither can be seen down a phone line. A number given blind is either padded to cover the worst case or it changes once work starts.

What makes one shower cost more than another?

Size, whether the drain has to move, what we find behind the old surround, the glass you choose, and the fittings. Drain relocation and hidden water damage are the two that most often separate a straightforward job from an expensive one.

Is the quote fixed?

You get one written price before anything is ordered. If something genuinely unexpected appears once the old surround is off, we stop and show you before any extra work happens, in writing.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes, through Acorn Finance. Checking your options is a soft pull, so it takes about a minute and does not affect your credit score.
