Walk-In Showers & Tub-to-Shower Conversions in El Cajon

El Cajon is single-storey ranch country, and that shapes almost everything about a bathroom conversion here — usually in the homeowner’s favour.

Ranch houses and the one-bathroom problem

A great deal of El Cajon was built as single-storey tract housing through the post-war decades. The pattern repeats: three bedrooms, one or one-and-a-half baths, a slab floor, and a bathroom whose layout has not changed since it was built.

The single-storey part is genuinely good news. Everything is on one level, so a bathroom that works is a house that works — there is no staircase waiting to become the next problem. It is one of the reasons people in these homes are often able to stay in them for a very long time.

The harder part is that many of these houses have exactly one full bathroom. That makes the length of the job the thing people care about most, more than the finish or even the price. It is the main reason we work with large panels rather than tile: there is no grouting and curing stage, so the room comes back into use in about 2–3 days.

Small rooms, and what can be done about them

Original bathrooms in these homes are compact. The good news is that replacing a tub with a glass-fronted walk-in shower usually makes the room feel larger, because a tub and its surround read as a solid block in a way a shower does not.

Occasionally there is more room to play with than it looks. In a ranch layout the wall at one end of the tub is often a closet or a hallway rather than something structural, which can sometimes allow a wider opening. That is a question to answer standing in the room, not from a floor plan.

Slab floors

Like most of inland San Diego County, these houses sit on concrete. Moving a drain means cutting it, which is real work and real money. Keeping the new shower in the tub's footprint usually avoids the question entirely, and that is the route we recommend unless there is a good reason not to.

El Cajon questions

Can you make the shower bigger than the tub it replaces?

Sometimes. In a single-bath ranch house the wall on one side is often a closet or a hallway rather than structure, which occasionally allows a wider opening. It is a question for the in-home visit, because it depends entirely on what that wall is doing.

Our only bathroom is the one being converted. How long are we without it?

This is the question we are asked most in El Cajon, because so many of these houses have one full bath. Most of our installs run about 2–3 days, largely because there is no tiling and grouting stage to cure. We will give you the expected dates in writing before we start.

Does the inland heat affect the materials?

Not meaningfully for the panels, which are stable and nonporous. The more relevant local point is the opposite of the coast: inland bathrooms dry faster, so mildew is less of a driver here than simply having a shower that is easier to get into.
